You can find ovulation test or monitors that are 99% accurate at detecting the rise in LH which signals ovulation. If you use a test that never indicates a surge, then you have probably not ovulated during the period while you were testing. Before assuming there is a problem with your cycle, try testing with a different type of test to determine if ovulation is occurring.

Since you have the highest chances of getting pregnant during ovulation, having intercourse at the right time is the second important step to conceiving. The best time to have intercourse is during the three days immediately after you have received a positive test response from your ovulation kit.

There are other ways of tracking your ovulation through fertility awareness that some couples are successful with and which don’t require the use of ovulation kits. This involves observing changes in cervical mucus and taking your temperature with a basal thermometer. When cervical fluid changes to wet, slippery “egg white” consistency, this should signal that ovulation is about to begin and these changes will continue until ovulation is over. The basal thermometer is used to detect a rise in the body’s temperature which signals that ovulation has just occurred.

Although you have your best chances of getting pregnant during ovulation, that doesn’t mean that you will get pregnant the first month that you use a method to track your ovulation. It can take many attempts over a long period of time for a woman to conceive. That also means that even though you may not have conceived after trying for several months, there may not be any problem that is preventing conception. It is perfectly normal to take a considerable amount of time to get pregnant.

Even though your chances of getting pregnant during ovulation are the greatest, sperm can live inside the vagina for three to five days. So, if you have intercourse before ovulation, you may still get pregnant. To maximize your odds of conception, have intercourse two or three times a week and use an ovulation tracking method to determine the times you should focus on!
